When your home makes you sick, conventional wisdom generally points you in one of two directions:
1.) Build a new home from scratch. For almost everyone, this is not feasible.
2.) Completely gut your current home - rip out all the walls and clean behind them, remove the insulation, the floors, and replace them all with low-VOC materials. Retrofit in a new state-of-the-art HEPA-filtered HVAC system with new ducts, a whole home dehumidifier, and fresh air intake. This is extremely expensive and invasive, and often doesn’t solve the issue.
I offer an alternative approach:
I work with what you have. I’ll help you improve your air quality with measurable changes without spending tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of dollars. You know the quote, “Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day; teach a person to fish and you feed them for a lifetime”? I will teach you how to "fish." In other words, I’ll teach you to be your own indoor air quality expert. This is a skill you will use for life, no matter where you live.
There may be a need for remediation, but that’s typically a last resort.
With my strategies, there is some learning and setup in the beginning, but after that, they shouldn’t take up much of your time or add any stress.
I can also help you decide if you should move or not. Then, we can talk about how to screen homes to increase your probability of finding a healthier one. We can also talk about the intersection of climate and moldy homes, if you’re open to moving to a drier region.
My practice is very client-guided. I check in with you about what feels right for you in terms of capacity, overwhelm, and budget. I also try to listen to what you actually need from me instead of sticking rigidly to what I feel is best.
I understand that you may be dealing with a very challenging situation. I believe it’s just as important that you leave a consultation feeling emotionally supported as it is that you receive good recommendations.
