Can a DIY Carbon Filter Remove VOCs Like the Expensive Brands?

Can a simple DIY carbon air purifier remove VOCs as well as the more expensive consumer units? In this video, I build a DIY activated carbon setup designed specifically for VOCs (odors) and compare it to three well-known consumer air purifiers: Austin Air, AllerAir, and Airpura.

I walk through the build, explain the reasoning behind using separate units for particles and gases, and share performance comparisons.

Many consumer air purifiers combine HEPA filters and thick carbon blocks, which can restrict airflow and increase noise. This video explores whether a simple, inexpensive DIY carbon filter can offer a more balanced solution for people dealing with persistent indoor odors from off-gassing, smoke, pesticide drift, or factory emissions.

This is not a lab-grade VOC test, but I hope it helps spark a more grounded conversation around how we clean our air.
